Sports Facilities in Killarney
While most people prefer to kick back and relax when they head on holiday, there’s always a few maniacs who like to keep fit and active. If you’re on of those maniacs then Killarney is perfect for you as there are innumerate facilities catering for dozens of sports in and around Killarney. Here’s five to check out.
1. Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre
This state-of-the-art facility opened its doors 6 years ago and has grown to become one of the most popular complexes in the town. It boasts a great gym, two pools (One for kids and one for adults), a health suite with treatment rooms and Kerry’s largest indoor arena. So whether you’re looking to stay toned or you’re just gagging for a game of footy with the lads you’re well catered for here. The centre is located on the Bypass Road just off Daly’s Roundabout.
2. All Weather Pitches
If you’re looking for an outdoor game of football on a quality surface then you’re also in luck as there are a number of top notch all weather and astro pitches dotted around Killarney. Killarney Celtic is home to two of the best in Kerry. The club is located in Direen just off the bypass. If you’d like to rent their pitch out for a kickabout then ring 086-6485809. Another option is the Fossa Amenity Park. This all-weather pitch is less than a year old and opened its doors only last September. It’s in the grounds of Fossa National School and you can rent it by calling 064-6634863.
3. Golf and Pitch and Putt
Killarney has long been a favourite for golfers and Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is renowned for having one of the finest parklands golf courses in Ireland. The club is actually comprised of two courses – Kileen and Mahony’s Point. Kileen has played host to the Irish Open on a number of occasions with the most recent being 2011. To find out more about the club check out their website here. Of course, if you’re not exactly flush with cash there are a number of quality pitch and putt courses in Killarney. Deerpark Pitch and Putt and the Gleneagle Pitch and Putt would be the two most popular.
4. Tennis and Squash.
If you’re a fan of fast-paced, racket based sports then you’re also well catered for. The Gleneagle Hotel, a short walk from the Killarney Holiday Village, has two tennis courts and two squash courts. They’re reasonably priced but the last time I was there it was a case of bring your own rackets though this may have changed since then.
5. Swimming Pools
We’ve already touched on what the Killarney Sports and Leisure has to offer but it is not the only swimming pool in town. There are loads of hotels with some great pools at low prices. The Malton, The Castlerosse, The Gleneagle and the Killarney Hotel all have great pools. There’s also a number of spas and health centres around the town in the Brehon, Europe and Randles Court if you have a lazy bones with you who doesn’t fancy swimming.
