Christmas in Killarney is always a special occasion: The town is transformed into a wonderland of seasonal delights with shops, restaurants and bars all getting into the festive spirit for a celebration of Christmas cheer.
Whatever the festival means to you, stay in Killarney at Christmas and discover everything from great shopping deals on Black Friday to children’s parades every weekend, right up to Midnight Mass in the breathtaking Cathedral.
This year has some new additions, the most exciting of which is the arrival of Muckross Christmas Magic.
Muckross Christmas Magic
Tickets are sold out for this latest addition to Killarney’s Christmas calendar. Muckross Traditional Farms is the perfect setting for a new interpretation of the Santa story, with Santa taking up residence from November 28 until just before Christmas with his elves and their cousins, the Mucklorians.
The Mucklorians are a tribe of mining elves who have discovered the world’s only store of Mica, which Santa needs to power his sleigh. When you arrive at the beautifully decorated Muckross Christmas Magic cottage, you will be greeted by the Gatekeeper. Hear stories from Mrs. Claus, make cookies and sip hot chocolate with the elves, and get your letter to Santa stamped at the post office.
The Mucklorians’ Mining Village
A horse-drawn carriage brings you down a twinkling avenue to the Mucklorians’ mining village, where you will see their little tents, complete with beds and a campfire. Watch the blacksmith at work and see the mine where the Mica comes from.
The high point of your visit is meeting the Big Man himself, of course, and you also get to count gift parcels with the elves and write your name in the Naughty or Nice book.
Deenagh Cottage
Santa is a busy man in Killarney this year: He is also helping to spread Christmas magic to all the boys and girls at Deenagh Cottage. Deenagh Cottage looks like something out of a Christmas fairy tale at any time of year, so it is a really special place to meet Santa Claus. He will be here every weekend from November 29th until December 13th and daily from December 19th until December 23rd. The event is an initiative of the Kerry Down Syndrome Association.
Christmas in Killarney Magic Parade
The Christmas in Killarney Magic Parade is so fabulous, it takes place not once, but five times. Watch Santa lead an enchanting array of beautifully decorated floats and popular children’s characters in a parade through the streets of the town. The first Christmas in Killarney Magic Parade takes place at 6pm on Saturday, November 28th, with the other parades taking place every Saturday night after that until the New Year (December 5th, 12th, 19th, and 31st). If previous years are anything to go by, this is one event no family in Killarney at Christmas should miss.
