4th of July in Killarney
The 4th of July is a weird holiday for us Europeans. It’s one of those holidays you see on American tv and think “well that looks like bloody good fun”. It’s good news then that Killarney will this year be hosting its first every 4th of July celebrations. Organised by the Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, the celebrations aim to celebrate Killarney’s strong links with the USA and thank American tourists for being such keen visitors of the town. There’s quite a packed itinerary planned and it looks so good that no matter what you’re nationality you’re sure to have a ball.
Killarney’s Main Street will be transformed into Main Street USA and that transformation will begin very early as to begin the day the Killarney Golf Club Choir will sing the Star Spangled Banner as the American Flag is hoisted above Killarney’s town hall. There will be a BBQ in the afternoon on Scott’s Street beginning at 2pm in aid of a local cancer charity and a Wild West Troupe will be roaming the town throughout the day to entertain revelers. The piece de resistance however will be the 4th of July Parade. It kicks off at 8pm and will see brass bands and street entertainers flood Killarney’s streets for the biggest parade of the year. Following the parade will be a feast of American swing music on the Beech Road which is sure to have your toes tapping and your feet jiving throughout the night. The evening will be ended with a traditional 4th of July fireworks display and is sure to alleviate the homesickness of any Americans away from home for the celebrations.
If a big party, a BBQ and a fireworks display haven’t got you excited then nothing will. The day is sure to be an absolute ball and should it prove a hit with locals and tourists I’m sure it will become an annual event. There are no tickets to buy or book, just head into Killarney town on the 4th of July and have a blast!
